Shopping in Bali: a guide to shopping centers and markets on the island
Bali is famous for its craftsmen and handmade goods. Here, there are not only shops selling exclusive jewelry or clothing, but entire neighborhoods dedicated to craftsmanship, where every house is a real workshop: a street with wood carvings, a street with stone carvers, a street with artists. But while carved doors and stone bathtubs are only interesting as museum exhibits, clothing, jewelry and decor are things you can pack in your suitcase and take home with you, so you can wrap yourself in a Balinese kimono, add aromatic oils to your bath and burn incense, spread a woven bedspread on your bed and hang a dream catcher above it to add boho style elements to your interior.
Where to go shopping in Bali? We have selected places where you can buy everything from European brands to local designer boutiques, from conceptual interior salons to local souvenir markets.
Read the article, save the locations on Google Maps and plan your shopping route around the island of Bali.
Beachwalk, a shopping and entertainment center for the whole family in Kuta
The largest shopping center in Bali, it is home to world-famous brands such as Guess, Lacoste, Victoria's Secret, Zara, OYSHO and others. Plan to spend the whole day at Beachwalk — the center is designed so that you can move from shop to shop in the open air, turning shopping into a pleasant stroll.
With shops selling clothes, cosmetics, electronics and children toys, there is something for everyone. On the ground floor, there is an art market selling Balinese jewelry and clothing. Sportswear shops can be found on the second floor, and on the third floor, there is the Miniapolis children play center. There are coffee shops and restaurants, a good supermarket, and don't forget to go up to the terrace on the top floor, which offers a stunning view of the sunset.
An excellent choice for combining lunch, shopping, a stroll in the shade of majestic banyan trees, immersion in rich Balinese culture, and even enjoying a relaxing massage.
Here you will find popular brands such as Hugo Boss, Polo Ralph Lauren, Juicy Couture, Calvin Klein and clothing from local manufacturers, Balinese cosmetics brands and sports outlets. In addition, the Bali Collection has pavilions with souvenirs and handicrafts created by Balinese artisans. Here you can purchase silver jewelry, textiles and art objects that embody the richness and diversity of the island's culture.
The complex has restaurants and cafes serving local dishes and cuisine from around the world, as well as themed events and concerts to introduce guests to the cultural features of Bali.
Pasar Badung, a traditional Balinese market for lovers of authenticity, in Denpasar
If you want to experience the atmosphere of a real Asian market, Pasar Badung is the place to go. This huge market is located in the very center of the island's capital, on the banks of the Badung River.
The ground floor sells food products, the first floor sells ceremonial clothing and accessories, but tourists love the second floor the most. This is where you will find the largest selection of souvenirs, from coconut shell, wood and mother-of-pearl tableware to local jewelry and balms with exotic scents.
Honest prices at Pasar Badung are lower than in tourist areas. It is not surprising that many souvenir shops in other parts of the island buy goods here for resale. But to get a fair price, don't forget to haggle in the best traditions: with jokes, excitement and a playful mood. And remember the main rule of negotiation — no aggression.
The renovated Ubud market recently reopened after reconstruction — street trading has been moved to a three-story building with pavilions. So, if you've seen the scenes with Julia Roberts in the film Eat. Pray. Love, it now looks a little different, but it still amazes with its abundance of goods: here you will find the famous ‘elephant pants’ known throughout Asia, island-style clothing made from natural fabrics, accessories such as straw hats and rattan handbags, and, of course, a huge variety of souvenirs. By the way, the latter are often very interesting and you are unlikely to find them in other parts of the island. Many of the goods are made by artisans from nearby villages and are only sold at the art market. So, if you like something, buy it.
The market is located in the bustling center of Ubud, right in front of the royal palace Puri Saren Ubud. Therefore, when you ask ‘how much does it cost?’, you will most likely be given the tourist price — feel free to start bargaining from half the price.
In the very center of the street is the symbol of the district — Bazaar Love Anchor. Here you will find both international and local brands for island life. Among them is the Australian brand Rip Curl, which specializes in surfing clothing. If you walk a little further past the shops at the entrance, you will come to the craft bazaar, which has more than 50 traders under its roof. Here you can buy souvenirs and interior items, handicrafts, rattan bags, sarongs, Hawaiian shirts, wooden kitchen utensils, original paintings and much more.
But Batu Bolong is not only Love Anchor, but also dozens of clothing and jewelry shops scattered along the street. Here are some of them:
Bamboo Blonde is a popular clothing brand on the island, made from natural fabrics with an island vibe. Outfits for the beach and parties
Lost in Paradise is another Balinese chain brand of women's and men's clothing, where you can put together a complete wardrobe: sweatshirts, caps, shorts, dresses and even socks
Esoteric World — men's and women's clothing with incredible mystical and shamanic prints, for those who like to attract attention and express themselves through style
Kapal Laut — a shop selling jewelry made from silver and natural stones.
Shopping in Seminyak: Seminyak Village and nearby streets
Seminyak Village is a shopping center with Indonesian and international brands, several cafes, and a space for local vendors selling clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. Although it is not as large as Beachwalk in Kuta, it is quite capable of satisfying the hunger of a shopaholic. Well-known brands represented here include H&M, Birkenstock, Aldo, Polo, Crocks and the Balinese Bamboo Blonde. There are several cafes, the Baked bakery and the Candylicious sweet and toy shop — one of the few places in Bali where you can buy M&Ms, Snickers and Toffifee.
And if Seminyak Village isn't enough for you, take a stroll through the nearby streets, where you'll find many shops selling jewelry, clothing and interior decor. Here are some of them:
PAULINA KATARINA is a women's clothing boutique created by two sisters. Their designs embody femininity and modern elegance.
Deus ex Machina is an Australian clothing brand inspired by motor sports, surfing, and skateboarding culture.
RELIGION — a British clothing brand known for its original designs in a mystical style
